The subject line on the email about Cain — who comes to the Carolinas Nov. 12 for a GOP presidential debate at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C. — reads: "Herman Cain Supporters Stand By Their Man."
You really want to use that title, Mr. Cain? At a time when politicians can't seem to keep their pants zipped up, the phrase evokes the image of a smiling wife standing beside her guilty husband more than it does Tammy Wynette, singer of the country classic that alludes to, but doesn't flat-out mention infidelity.
Remember New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey's press conference with a sardonically smiling Dina standing beside her then-husband as he announced to the world that he was gay?
Then there was John Edwards, whose wife, the late Elizabeth, sat with him on Oprah as he talked about his affair with Rielle Hunter.
What about the wife of former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who stood by as he announced that he was indeed Client 9 and had been paying for sex (um... services) from an escort?
And we can't forget Hillary Clinton's consistent support of former President Bill Clinton through his numerous affairs.
So, standing by your man usually means he's guilty of something. But Cain fans say their "man" is a victim — of the "liberal media":
Although the Iowa Caucuses are exactly two months away, Cain supporters around the country are already casting their votes — with their wallet. In the last three days, Cain backers have given generously to Mr. Cain’s presidential campaign by providing him over $1.2 million in financial gifts.“These extra resources are critical to help fight back the malicious attempts of the liberal media and political rivals to derail the Cain Train. The Washington elite and the political establishment underestimate the power and commitment of American people, said Mark Block, Chief of Staff to the Herman Cain presidential campaign. “Since the beginning of the campaign, Mr. Cain has told the American people that he has their back and now the American people are showing they have his.”
Online donations and phone donations have doubled their normal daily rate since Monday and the campaign has received threefold their normal monthly fundraising average in the past 72 hours.
Attacking the media — it seems to work out pretty well for GOP candidates, one way or the other. Just ask Sarah Palin.
Sing it, Tammy...
