Mecklenburg arts council announces 2012 regional grant recipients

The Mecklenburg County Arts & Science Council announced today the recipients of $50,000 in funding for regional art projects.

The Regional Artist Project Grants — which the ASC doles out in conjunction with arts councils in Cabarrus, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Rowan, Rutherford and York counties, as well as the North Carolina Arts Council and Blumenthal Endowment — will go to 31 of 106 area applicants. The alliance distributes the funds to artists pursuing specified projects that will help them better their craft.

Now — *insert drumroll here* — on to the chosen ones:

Gretchen Alterowitz - $2,000
Mecklenburg County
To fund the rental of professional recording equipment to record the artist’s choreography, to be broadcast on cable TV and released internationally on DVD by in 2013

Betsy Birkner - $975
Mecklenburg County
To attend a master class by a figurative artist to learn methods of clay drapery techniques and surface finishing

Gayle Clayton - $2,000
Rutherford County
To attend a digital book conference to network and brainstorm cutting edge technology into the electronic publishing world

Tenya Colemon - $2,000
Mecklenburg County
To pay for time with Jazz Master, Cyrus Chestnut (Jazz Pianist & Educator)

Sharon Dowell - $1,650
Mecklenburg County
To fund a two-week Tyrone Guthrie Center residency fee in Ireland

Nichole Gause - $400
Mecklenburg County
To pay for a master writing class at the Gotham Writer’s Workshops

Raymond Grubb - $1,304
Mecklenburg County
To purchase supplies to print 12 diptychs from current portrait work

Valerie Hastie - $500
Mecklenburg County
To purchase digitally printed acrylic materials to create a series of backlit mixed-media photographic images

Dawn Hilton-Williams - $1,395
Mecklenburg County
To pay for a conference registration for the Writer’s Digest Conference in January, 2012

Dustin Hofsess - $2,000
Mecklenburg County
To record a solo album of original instrumental compositions

Joe Keller - $1,100
Mecklenburg County
To purchase Adobe Production Premium Suite

Chad Lawson - $2,000
Mecklenburg County
To hire Evolution Promotion, an established PR and artist development company

Allison Luce - $2,000
Iredell County
To purchase a kiln to create larger more sophisticated work increasing the ability to exhibit and sell sculptures

Allison McGowan Hermans - $2,000
Cabarrus County
To construct an outdoor atmospheric gas-fired kiln for the creation of handbuilt porcelain claywork

Lea McLaughlin - $2,000
Mecklenburg County
To fund the completion of three recordings, necessary for an electronic press kit

Beth Melton - $2,000
York County
To cover the fee to attend a two-week textile related class at Penland School of Craft

Ramona Moore Big Eagle - $2,000
Mecklenburg County
To develop a fully functioning interactive website

Natasha Morris - $35
Mecklenburg County
To apply as a fellow in the Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab, a five-day, hands-on writer’s workshop in January 2012

Juan Ossa - $1,800
Mecklenburg County
To purchase a Canon EOS D7 DSLR camera

William Puckett - $1,147

To purchase a wood planing set to salvage native North Carolina timber and create planks for painting canvases
