STEVE WINWOOD
Recapping his musical journeys and incarnations through five decades and counting would fill a couple of volumes. So, let's stick with simple math here. Winwood owns one of the most soulful, distinct and recognizable voices in all of music. His genre-stretching work in Traffic and Blind Faith are rock lore. Even his slick pop forays into radio hitland of the '80s were accented with the ability to weave a memorable song with fluid delivery and an aura that made it distinctly original. Sure, his solo output has been inconsistent - name one artist who has delivered consistently over half a century - but Winwood remains a live performer at heart. His multi-instrumental and oft pioneering explorations of jazz, rock, R&B, blues, soul and Latin music over the years are made all the better by his rich croon. His two albums of the current century, Nine Lives and About Time, are solid and imbued with brilliant flourishes that hark back to the musically adventurous early years. Also on the bill are his pals the Allman Brothers Band. $24.50-$80.40. Aug. 31, 6:30 p.m. Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, 707 Pavilion Blvd. 704-549-1292.
