First Drip (3/24/14): Amelie's in hot water, Brooklyn returns?, Egypt sentences 529 to death, more

Justin Miller was an employee at Amelie's French Bakery until he decided to quit, alleging in an open letter that the bakery does not compensate workers for overtime. Amelie's has since issued two responses. The first basically says it hires people who are more prone to this sort of drama. The second is a "heartfelt apology." Police are looking into why an 18-year-old UNC Charlotte student fell to his death from an on-campus dorm room window Sunday. "Though the investigation is still underway, there appears to be no foul play involved in this incident," said a university spokesman.

There was once a neighborhood named Brooklyn in the southeast part of what is now Uptown. The neighborhood, which was filled mostly with working-class blacks, was torn down during the 20th century. Now city leaders plan to revive it - if they can get their plan off the ground.

Egypt has sentenced 529 people to death, the largest capital punishment case on record in the county. "The alleged supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi were convicted on charges of killing a single police officer, the attempted murder of two others, and attacking a police station in the Nile Valley city of Minya last August."

Architects will present their idea for a new Sandy Hook Elementary School, to be built on the site of the first Sandy Hook, which was torn down after the December 2012 shootings that left 20 first graders and six educators dead.
