Arts Sustain Me Baby, among this week's art openings in the Q.C.

Check out these art events and exhibits, happening this week in Charlotte and the surrounding area.
Sustain Me Baby at UNC Charlotte Center City: It's not often that I sit in my car and cry in parking lots. But a while back, after having seen Chris Jordan's Midway series - featuring photographs of dead baby albatrosses, whose stomachs were injured by plastics and trash that they'd eaten because humans hadn't properly disposed of the materials - I did just that. Tears streamed down my face as I witnessed a flock of seagulls exploring the trash that filled the lot where I sat. Hopefully, UNC Charlotte's newest exhibit, Sustain Me Baby, won't have this particular effect on you, but if it does, don't fight it - just let those tears flow! The exhibit features Joyce Dallal's "The Other Toy Story," a massive, 10-foot-tall trash receptacle that resembles a baby. Those attending the interactive installation are encouraged to throw plastic toys into the "baby" as a way of remembering that the waste we leave behind will affect the next generation. John Flynn's Feed the Baby video, which chronicles the first installation of Dallal's work, screens continuously in the gallery and some of Chris Jordan's Midway photographs will also be on display. Come during the March 28 opening reception, which features a live performance from members of North Carolina Dance Theatre (choreographed by Mark Diamond, with special costumes made of recycled items) and artist discussions. The Sage Art & Craft Show at Ballantyne Resort: This showcase offers up a mix of mediums. You'll find artists and craftsmen with jewelry, pottery, paintings, wood and fiber works, clothing, accessories and more. There will also jewelry making classes throughout the day. Free admission. Arts Festival at Levine Jewish Community Center: The folks at LJCC are presenting this fest, which will feature local artisans selling handcrafted art and other goods. There will also be food trucks onsite and live music and dance performances through out the day. Free admission. 24th Annual Regional Collegiate Art History Symposium at Mint Museum Uptown: The perfect way to increase your art knowledge. Sit back and relax during this special symposium. Undergraduate art history students will present the research they've done on specific works of art and artists that can be seen at Mint Museum. Each student will speak for 15-20 minutes and then answer questions from the audience. Light refreshments to follow. Free admission.
