First Drip (5/12/14): One in 10 CMS teachers has left, Texas middle school cancels tackle program, more

One in 10 Charlotte-Mecklenburg teachers has left their job this year. Most likely because of low pay, about 860 teachers, or 9.6 percent, had resigned or retired or left the district as of April 9, the most in five years. ICYMI, Gov. McCrory announced a plan to boost teacher pay that one expert said was a start but short on details.

A state commission developing rules for fracking in North Carolina has asked for a three-month extension to consider the thousands of public comments it's received about the controversial energy-extraction method. The state is expected to begin to allow fracking next spring.

The school board of a middle school in Texas has voted to end its 7th grade tackle program, opting instead for flag football. Officials in Marshall, known as a prominent Texas football town, say the measure passed with little opposition. "I'm surprised, in some ways, because you know how it is in a one high school town where football is everything," said Marc Smith, the superintendent of the Marshall Independent School District. "I anticipated a little more resistance and concern. But the safety factor really resonated with our parents. They get it, and they see their little 11- or 12-year-olds getting slammed to the ground."

The World Cup stadium Brasilia is building has cost nearly $905 million in public funding - the second-most expensive stadium in the world, even though the city has no professional team. Construction has been marred with corruption since it started. Now, an analysis of campaign finance documents shows that the lead constructor "increased its political donations 500-fold in the most recent election."
