Nancy Writebol, a member of Charlotte’s Calvary Church and a missionary in Africa, was infected with the Ebola virus while trying to combat an outbreak in Liberia. Writebol was working as a hygienist, spraying protective suits worn by doctors treating Ebola patients. Her husband David, who's also a missionary in Africa, said she is in isolation, as the virus is highly contagious.

State legislators say they have finally agreed on a version of the budget nearly a month into the fiscal year. Teachers will receive a 7 percent raise, and teacher assistant positions will be saved. Lawmakers have agreed to cut $135 million in funding for Medicaid but will leave the details to a subcommittee.

The U.N. Security Council called for an “immediate and unconditional humanitarian cease-fire” in Gaza in attempts to end a three-week conflict that has already killed an estimated 1,035 Palestinians and 43 Israeli soldiers.

Swimmers cooling off on a muggy day, volleyball players on the sand and people strolling the famous boardwalk were jolted."
