Cheap list: film, art, boats and more

Going out in Charlotte doesn't have to be expensive. In fact, to prove that statement, we've compiled a list of cheap - $10 or less - things to do in the Q.C. this weekend. These events may vary, but they're all entertaining and they won't break your bank (piggy banks excluded).

Free Film Friday at The Light Factory: The first Friday of every month The Light Factory showcases flicks - from documentaries to arts - by lesser known filmmakers. The program lasts 60 minutes and has an introduction from curator Ross Wilbanks. This week's feature includes two animation films. Free, but donations accepted. Underground ARTcade at CenterStage@NoDa: An interactive local gathering of music, art, and culture. Featured artists include Eric Alan Wattinne, Amanda McElroy, CJ Mtg Byoyo, Bailey Sowell and more. Local music by Rok Six, DJ EnNy BeAtS, and Jenny Gerber. There will be movies and food vendors from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and dancing 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Free admission. Aug. 1. CenterStage@NoDa, 2315 N. Princess of Persia Night at Barreled at the Lift: The lounges Persian-theme includes music, bellydancing and drink specials ($2.50 select beers and $4 on select shots). Plus, there's the hookah. I Love the ’90s at Strike City: Dress in your '90s best for this themed event with retro video game tournaments, a costume contest, bowling and more. Free admission. Aug. 1, 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. StrikeCity, 210 E. Trade St. 704-716-9300. www.strikecitycharlotte.com.

BYOB Festival at U.S. National Whitewater Center: The Build Your Own Boat (what were you thinking?) competition features several displays throughout the day, but there's also live music. The full schedule is as followed: Amphibious Duathlon, 8 a.m.;
Ancient Cities, 1 p.m.; Wave 1 boats, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.; Wave 2 boats, 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.; Simplified, 3 p.m.; Wave 3 boats, 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Mingo Fishtrap, 5 p.m.; Wave 4 boats, 6:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.; BYOB awards, 7:45 p.m.; Marc Broussard, 8 p.m. Free.
