Cheers for people who have been waiting more than 25 years for I-485 to be completed. One of the most time-consuming highway projects will finally open in June with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Duke Energy goes before the judge today to offer a settlement of $102 million in a criminal investigation into the great coal ash spill of 2014 at Dan River. Court filings reveal that the company ignored repeated warnings that an environmental catastrophe was imminent.
The Charlotte Business Journal interviewed Fuel Pizza executive Jeremy Wladis, who was a passenger on the Amtrak crash that killed at least seven people and injured more than 200 people. Wladis used to live in Charlotte but now manages the pizza operation out of New York. Investigators say the train's engineer doesn't remember what happened, and that the train was speeding at more than 100 miles per hour.
At least $6 billion. That's the figure an internal investigation from the Department of Veterans Affairs’ deputy assistant secretary for acquisition and logistics accuses the agency of wasting annually. "In a 35-page document addressed to VA Secretary Robert McDonald, the official accuses other agency leaders of 'gross mismanagement' and making a 'mockery' of federal acquisition laws that require competitive bidding and proper contracts."
