News Lunch Break (11/4/15): Roberts to be Charlotte's next mayor

Democratic nominee and former Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners chair Jennifer Roberts will be Charlotte's next mayor. She beat Edwin Peacock III, his second consecutive attempt at the office. Roberts won with 52 percent of the vote, causing Peacock to concede just before 10 p.m. Under 15 percent of the registered voters in the city showed up for the vote. Roberts gave her acceptance speech at Jackalope Jack's in the Elizabeth neighborhood, calling her win a "win for Charlotte." 

Crews shut down the northbound lanes on Sharon Amity Road between U.S. 74 and Kipling Drive this morning, and the lanes will remain closed until at least midday today, the NC DOT said. Officials said a pavement failure caused a depression that was unsafe for drivers. 

Angela Vogel, one of the four protesters who carried out an action that grabbed nationwide attention during the Monday Night Football game in Charlotte, has been doing interviews with local media, explaining that the group was trying to raise awareness of the construction of a liquified natural gas export terminal in Maryland because it is endangering lives. The group of four, including two rappellers and two anchors, unfurled a banner during the game asking Bank of America to stop financing the terminal. Vogel said none of the protesters are from Charlotte and they chose the stadium because it is named after Bank of America. She did not say how the protesters got the climbing gear into the stadium. 

Police are still looking for the suspects in a shooting that occurred in northeast Charlotte during a home invasion yesterday morning. Police say a suspect — possibly more than one — kicked in the door of a home on Matlea Court near Plaza Road Extension and started to head upstairs before running into 21-year-old Semantha Bunce, who was at home taking care of her newborn baby. A suspect shot Bunce and fled the scene. There's not much information on the suspect(s) at this time.
