Americans are a simple people. Just give us a ball, a lot of sweaty dudes and a chance at world domination, and we'll love you forever. Or at least until the season's over.
Yesterday fans of the U.S. national soccer team - or people just looking for an excuse to take off their shirts in public and drink a lot of beer - gathered at Courtyard Hooligans in Uptown to watch our boys narrowly miss a victory against the much-better Portugal team. And the smart folks at Charlotte's favorite soccer bar caught all the insanity on film.
But as one commenter and likely communist said, "Aw, it would have been better if you showed the reaction of the Americans to the 95 minute goal of Portugal :P."
Nothing says football like shoulder pads, blood and heavy music, right? There's a petition going around online to have Gwar perform at the 2015 Super Bowl halftime show. Really.
Part of the petition reads:
We don't want another year of sitting around talking through a muted, boring NFL Super Bowl halftime show. We want something different. We want a real spectacle that only GWAR can provide. Doesn't the NFL want more viewers? Don't advertisers want more people paying attention? This way everyone wins.Plus, GWAR's relationship with American football is one of the strongest in music. Front man Dave Brockie writes a football column for MetalSucks.com called "Necessary Roughness" even the "The Dan Patrick Show" has an Oderous mask on display. It's been suggested by Sports Illustrated that GWAR should become mascots!
Think it's a joke? While I'd say it's not likely, they've already gotten more than 17,500 signatures. It just won't happen this year - Bruno Mars is slated to be the performer.
When I walk into an executive office on the fourth floor of Belk at South Park Mall, I am introduced to Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. In the midst of an onslaught of press interviews, Newton appears ready to get on with his afternoon appearance, weary from answering the same questions over and over.
"First, as an Auburn alum, let me say, 'War Eagle!'" A smile cracks as he yells, "War Eagle!!!" and reaches out for a second, much heartier handshake. As the quarterback who led the 2010 Auburn University football team to its first national championship since 1957, Newton has quite a home in the hearts of fans. And because he recently went back to the school to finish his degree in sociology, he's also earned more respect.
But I'm not there to talk about Auburn, I am chatting with Newton about his new clothing line with Belk, Made. It's no surprise - Newton's not making or designing the clothes himself, he's simply attaching his name to a line he approves of in order to help his (and Belk's) brand and business.
"In the great words of Jay-Z, 'I'm a business, man,'" Newton says. The line includes everything from shorts and shoes to suits and T-shirts.
I have to ask if there were any plans to make a tear-away T-shirt - one that would make it easier for him to unleash his Superman touchdown pose.
The Charlotte Roller Girls got crunched by the Cape Fear Roller Girls, 218-64, on Saturday, Sept. 24 at Grady Cole Center. The match was a lot tougher than the score would lead you to believe as both teams tried out new defensive strategies and played their hearts out for the two-hour duration.
Here's a quick slideshow of some of the action:

Charlotte's D.J. Augustin missed a last second layup, sending the team's battle with the Magic into overtime. But the fire that burned within the Bobcats during the second half and charged a comeback couldn't fuel their overtime abilities as Orlando scored the first nine points and sent the Bobcats packing. There will be no joy in Mudville tonight. With the loss, Charlotte was eliminated from playoff contention.
The Charlotte Bobcats remain one game out of the final playoff spot after knocking off the Cleveland Cavaliers at home on March 30. The game came down to a missed last-second shot by the Cavs that gave the 98-97 win to Charlotte and kept them in the postseason hunt. The Bobcats next home game is on Sunday, April 3, at 6 p.m. against Washington.
