Drinks, drinks and more drinks at Bartender's Ball

Posted by Anita Overcash on Sat, Feb 18, 2012 at 8:00 AM

What better way to remember all of the U.S. presidents (even those that we really, really wish we could forget) than by drinking? The 11th Annual Charlotte Bartender's Ball is actually happening the day before President's Day, but you'll be feeling the effects of the shindig the next day — and nothing says patriotism like a good ol' hangover. Folks get to dress in their very best to sip on specialty drinks concocted by some of the best bartenders from around the Q.C. Cheers to that!

Graham Funke headlines this year's event and proceeds raised will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. $70. Sun., Feb. 19, 7 p.m.-12 a.m. Blake Hotel, 555 S. McDowell St. For more information, visit www.charlottebartendersball.com.

Posted by Anita Overcash on Sat, Feb 18, 2012 at 8:00 AM

sweet_tooth1-681x1024.jpg

For folks with a weakness for desserts (like myself), the Sweet Tooth Festival is more than just "something to do." It's a time to indulge in whatever sugary treats you desire (forget calorie-counting and diets, at least for today). At the fest, more than 20 bakers/bakeries, chocolatiers and pastry chefs — including Cupcrazed Cakery, Hot Sugar Confections, FuManChuCupCakes, The Secret Chocolatier, Kai's Kookie's and many others — will have salivating treats. Don't forget to brush your teeth before you go to bed. A portion of proceeds raised from the fest will benefit The Joe Martin ALS Foundation. $25. Sun., Feb. 19, 2-6 p.m. Black Lion, 10605 Park Road. For more information, visit www.sweettoothfestival.com.

Bead hoarding at Hartigan's

Posted by Anita Overcash on Fri, Feb 17, 2012 at 8:05 AM

During Hartigan's 4th Annual Harti Gras, it's forecasted to rain Mardis Gras beads. Whoever has the most beads at the end of the night will win $100 in cash. With such high stakes there is bound to be some pushing and shoving, but try to play nice. If it does turn into a bit of an Irish bar brawl, remember rule No. 1: Keep your fists poised in front of your face, just in case someone "accidentally" smacks you as they try to grab a string of beads that just dropped from the balcony. - Tricia Bangit $10. Sat., Feb. 18 10 p.m. Hartigan's Irish Pub, 601 S. Cedar St. 704-347-1841. www.hartigans.com.

Spamalot invades Knight Theater

Hear ye, hear ye! You can sit your arse at home and read the legendary — and dryly serious — tales of King Arthur or you can travel to Knight Theater (what a fitting name, right?) for a dreadfully silly take on the adventures of the less than magnificent Arthur and his roundtable of numbskulls. Broadway's Spamalot musical captures the essence of Monty Python and the Holy Grail with vicious bunnies, French fiends, seductive dames and the meat of champions — spam. Sat., Feb. 18, 2 & 8 p.m. and Sun., Feb. 19, 1:30 & 7 p.m. Knight Theater, 430 S. Tryon St. 704-372-1000. www.blumenthalarts.org.

Democratic National Convention 2012 Notebook: Leadership team faces questions about Latino vote, same-sex marriage

In a conference call to formally announce Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's nomination as chair of the Democratic National Convention, the mayor and other DNC heavy-hitters fielded questions about Latino voters' support of President Obama and the Democratic Party's position on same-sex marriage.

The issue of same-sex marriage is particularly urgent for North Carolinians, considering the May vote on a state constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman — with groups aligning on both sides. That, together with recent fights over health-care coverage of contraception, has elevated social issues in the presidential campaign, particularly in this swing state.

“I do support marriage equality,” Villaraigosa said on Wednesday, but added, it’s “not for me to dictate that” for others in the party. Democratic Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, whose nomination of Villaraigosa will be presented to the convention rules committee and voted on by the delegates at the opening session, said the drafters of the convention platform “have a deliberative process to go through,” starting with regional meetings. She emphasized Villaraigosa’s career, which he has dedicated, she said, to civic engagement.

Conjoined Opposites challenges viewers

Posted by Anita Overcash on Thu, Feb 16, 2012 at 11:04 AM

Points_Words_ThreadsSmll.jpg

Artist Indrani Nayar-Gall draws influence for her Conjoined Opposites exhibit at Winthrop University from both her native land of India and travel. The show is described as reflecting her thoughts on "migration, identity, loss, memory and displacement." By using two- and three-dimensional media — works that combine things like prickly materials with soft flesh-like yarns — she challenges viewers to contemplate feelings contrary to one another. Open today from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Exhibit continues through March 30. Winthrop University (held in Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick Gallery), 107 McLaurin Hall, Rock Hill. 803-323-2493. www2.winthrop.edu/vpa/galleries.
