Music Menu: Idols Live!

Posted by Christian Yoder on Sat, Aug 1, 2009 at 9:11 AM

SATURDAY, AUG. 1

Idols Live! It was so fitting, last year, when the sponsor of the American Idol tour was Pop Tarts. Oh well ... Last season's top 10 are out on tour to sing their greatest karaoke hits with a live band. It's amazing that a "cover band" can pack "The Cable Box" downtown, but there's no accounting for bad taste. Rumor has it Kris Allen no longer has to sing his wretched first single, and everyone's favorite screecher Adam Lambert will have the guyliner caked on extra thick so it can be seen from the upper deck. I'd suggest bringing wine to go with all the cheese. Time Warner Cable Arena (Jeff Hahne)

Jealous, anyone? Are you a wannabe who can't? I can't believe you have the gall to suggest that Adam Lambert has no talent, you moron.

What's with the high and mighty atitude? Thses kids just want to break into recording business and make some money. I don't care for the show, but I must say, they go through some grueling process just to make it this far. And I believe there are some future stars among them, especially that heavy guyliner kid.

Here's my thought — and one that's echoed through a lot of the music community in the country — If these kids are truly talented, they'll be discovered if they put in the hard work. Instead, they're having fame handed to them on a silver platter for winning a karaoke contest. Adam Lambert belongs on Broadway. Guess where he's been up until now — that's right, in musicals. A lot of these kids think they're going to sell millions of records and very few have careers that are going to last... What ever happened to earning it, putting in your time and working your way up the ladder? You sure don't hear much from Taylor Hicks or Ruben Sutuddard these days... I'm jealous? No. Much like the majority of musicians, I spent eight years working for free doing what I love — music writing — in order to establish a career doing it. Where did I say Lambert has no talent? I just said he's a screecher. I think he belongs in a play, not in front of a rock band. American Idol is entertainment and a karaoke contest performed with a live band. Where's the longevity? How many contestants from seasons 1, 2, 3, etc. would even be able to sell out Amos'? Very few. They get their 15 minutes and then have to struggle just like all the other musicians in the world. Just because Ryan Seacrest tells you something, don't believe it's true.

"These kids just want to break into the business and make some money." — So do millions of kids who are in bands all over the world and who are busting their asses to get noticed. They're also writing their own music ...

I have never paid attention to American Idol, or any or show for that matter. Shows come on, if you have time you watch, It ends. You either think to yourself, oh that was good,or oh, that really sucked. This turned out to be a very stressful year. So many people who live in Michigan have lost their jobs. To keep my mind off all of the stress, I paid attention to American Idol this year. OMG thank you Adam Lambert for trying out!
