Does everybody I graduated with rap now?

Not that long ago, you had to wait until your 10-year high school reunion to see what everybody you weren't that close to was up to.

Now that Facebook has allowed fringe friends to be as up-to-date with you as your close ones, it's amazing to see how many people that never picked up a pen, pad or microphone before graduation are rapping now.

Are they incredibly late bloomers artistically or shrewd opportunists? Maybe they watched Hustle & Flow and got some ideas, who knows? But the numbers of links, e-mails and messages I've got from former classmates directing me toward their MySpace pages, mixtape download links and YouTube channels are at an all-time high.

In some respects, I'm actually kind of proud. I mean, West Charlotte is probably the most loved and hated high school in the city, but people definitely respect our hustle and that's what rap is to them, a hustle.

The problem is, it's never really inspired and for the most part, not that good. But that doesn't stop them from pushing forward. I can dig it.

I mean it only takes one hit to go from no name to big time and the same way they pulled bullshit excuses out of their ass for teachers in high school, they might just pull a banger out as well.

In the meantime though, let's keep the blast e-mails and Facebook IMs to a minimum guys, and if I come across a track of yours that's cool or is interesting, I'll do my best to make sure it ends up right here on the Vibes blog because if anybody supports local music (before they go on Letterman) it's Creative Loafing.

Support local music, like it or not.
