The Deal: Charlotte’s The Sammies perform a headlining show at Visulite Theater. The Spalding Grays and The Unawares open.

The Good: The three-piece Charlotte-based act The Spalding Grays opened the show with a short set of indie laced pop songs. Keys, guitar, bass and drums were the elements that created the juices behind this band’s well-bred spacey and rhythmic tunes.

A set by the three-piece Colombia-based band The Unawares followed The Spalding Grays, before The Sammies claimed the stage and kicked into rock action with “Panther Leap.” The Sammies went on to play more than 15 songs, including “For John,” “Falling Out,” “Let It Go,” “Trainwreck,” and more (newbies too!). Energy filled the set throughout the entirety of the group’s performance and though the show wasn’t packed, fans in front of the stage made up for the abundance of space by dancing around throughout the concert.

The Bad: I wasn’t crazy about The Unawares. ‘Make it stop,’ was what I thought during most of the group’s punk rock set, which seemed to linger on and on.

The Verdict: Support local music and check out The Sammies the next time they play around town. Having heard numerous good things about this Q.C. rock act signed to MoRisen Records, it was exciting and worth while to see them play a sweaty rock-filled show.
