Coheed and Cambria w/ Circa Survive & Torche
The Fillmore Charlotte

The Deal: Coheed and Cambria kickoff their Year of the Black Rainbow tour to a sold-out assembly at The Fillmore Charlotte.
The Good: Circa Survive, the better of the two opening bands, accelerated the energy of the crowd until all you could see was a cesspool of air-pounding fists and body-surfers.
The big dogs, Coheed and Cambria, took the stage at a little after 10 and opened with The Broken. The majority of the songs they played in the start of their set-list were compiled from their new album, Year of the Black Rainbow. A few older and more popular songs were thrown in the mix later on in the set, keeping the energy and familiarity of the crowd consistent.
Acting as a good transition point into Pearl of the Stars (which is written about front man Claudio Sanchezs wife) Sanchez asked the crowd to join in and wish his wife, who was backstage, a happy birthday.
Lead guitarist, Travis Stever, kicked ass on guitar during the Welcome Home encore performance, which was definitely the head-banging highlight of the evening.
You can tell by their performance the guys were ready to be back on tour. They werent all over the stage, as the two opening bands were, these guys exuded all of their energy through their craft. They absolutely command a stage presence and a sold-out crowd proves that they deserve to finally be headlining their own tour.
The Bad: Torche, the first opening set, crashed and burned on the stage. The crowd was completely limp throughout their performance. During their set each of the songs sounded the same, the drummer who was the most entertaining dropped his stick and had his cymbal mics turned up too loud. The vocals were far and few between which wasnt a bad thing since each time the singer opened his mouth all you could hear where shrieks of mumbled mic echoes ya know, the kind that perforate your eardrums to generate a we are a rock band affect rather than a we kick ass affect.
It would have been nice to see only one opening band perform rather than the two. By the time Coheed & Cambria got on stage, a good two hours had passed and the crowd had become antsy from standing for so long people were stretching and squatting on the floor between the set changes. By the time Coheed and Cambria performed, the crowd was ready to rock out and head out.
The Verdict: Besides for being a relatively long show, the almost four hours of standing were well worth the energy rush you got when Coheed and Cambria came on stage and played hits like Welcome Home and The Broken.
