Korn w/ 2 Cents, Saint Diablo

The Fillmore Charlotte

The Deal: Jagermeister Musictour brings Korn, 2 Cents and Saint Diablo out for a "Ballroom Blitz."

SaintDiablo

The Good: The show got started around 7:30 p.m. when Saint Diablo hit the stage, after a brief, but raunchy set from a comedian host. They tried, but it didn't seem like the crowd was that into the band's brand of metal for their short 20-minute set.

The crowd seemed to be a bit more receptive to the second opener, 2 Cents, after some sound problems were worked out. Once they kicked off, the band went full speed for its 30-minute set, getting the crowd going with its song "Get Fucked" and closing with a cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Head Like a Hole." Singer/drummer Adam O'Rourke found the time to trash a few bands, calling out Fall Out Boy, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. He also said, "Metal is not a eye makeup or t-shirt you wear, it's in your mind and in your heart."

If guitarist Adair Cobley looked familiar, it might be from his stint on the show Battle for Ozzfest, representing his band Manntis.

The half-full Fillmore was clearly there for one band though - the headliner, Korn. The song "4u" played through the speakers, and when it ended, the band members slowly took the stage before launching into "Dead Bodies Everywhere."

Guitarist "Munky" was all over the place all night — playing with pedals and effects, rolling on the floor, running around the stage.

Korn3

Bassist "Fieldy" seemed to be a little more subdued.

The band strayed into a cover of "We Will Rock You" during "Coming Undone," and gave an extended intro for "Falling Away From Me." They also gave the crowd a taste of the new album, performing "Oildale (Leave Me Alone)."

Korn6

"Somebody Someone" led into a short but frenzied drum solo by Ray Luzier, formerly of Army of Anyone, who joined the band full time last year.

There wasn't much banter with the crowd, as the band instead focused on the music and running through a bevy of hits, with a rarity like "Helmet in the Bush" thrown in.

Korn5

The encore began with singer Jonathan Davis on the bagpipes before "Shoots and Ladders" and ended with "Got the Life." Davis was often seen inhaling from an oxygen mask between songs — something he reportedly does for a natural high, though it's also been noted that he suffers from asthma.

The Bad: That more people weren't there. That the band is playing the same setlist on every night of their short tour.

The Verdict: There's always an interesting energy in the room when a band who is used to performing in arenas condenses things down into a smaller venue...
