Video: J Cole's "Who Dat"

Posted By on Tue, Jun 22, 2010 at 10:38 AM

It's been a bout a year since Fayetteville, N.C., rapper J Cole became a household name on the hip hop scene. From dropping a critically acclaimed mixtape, The Warm Up, to signing with Jay-Z's Roc Nation label, he's given people back home a lot to smile about.

Premiering yesterday on BET's 106 & Park, "Who Dat" has Cole stomping through the streets of his hometown and allowing pretty much everybody in the community to play a part. Whether it was the marching band from E.E. Smith High School or cheerleaders from Fayetteville State University, seemingly everybody had a role in the extravaganza. And did I mention flames? Lots and lots of flames and explosions because, if we've learned anything from recent cell phone commercials, chicks love guys posing in front of flames. Considering the last time I went to Fayetteville for a wedding it was 104 degrees, I'd buy it being hot as hell there.

For director BB Gun, who also directed Cole's video for "Simba" over a year ago and most recently directed Asher Roth's grocery store odyssey video for "Muddy Swim Trunks" the video is just a natural progression to what's quickly becoming the BB Gun Style. It's clear he's mastered the walk and talk rap video and probably watched videos like N.W.A.'s "Straight Outta Compton" where it seemed like all the artists paced the streets with fury spewing lyrics, a thousand times.

Would've loved to see some troops in this one since that's sort of the entire reason Fayetteville exist, Fort Bragg and Pope AFB, but they were understandably a little busy. Wouldn't be surprised to New Orleans Saints remix to this song come football season, seeing as they kinda have the 'Who Dat?' thing cornered down there.
