Hey, what's the difference between the Carolina Panthers and the Taliban? The Taliban has a running game. Ba-dum-chee. That's right, the hometowners are so godawful, internet jokes about them are sprouting like, well, like jokes on the internet. The woeful Panthers take on Jake "The Snake" Plummer and the Arizona Cardinals today at 1pm at Ericsson Stadium. Tickets are $39-$46, available by calling 704-358-7000 or 704-522-6500. Tonight is New Year's Eve. A time for deep reflection upon the passing year. A time to take stock of your life and make resolutions to change for the better. A time to get smashed with your closest friends and watch a robotic Dick Clark count down the last remaining seconds of 2001. Charlotte has a plethora of things to offer, including package shows at the Comedy Zone, Red, White and Blue 2002 at Have A Nice Day Cafe, Bar Charlotte and The Hut, and "Children's New Year's Eve with Thomas Moore" at the Children's Theatre. For a complete, detailed list of New Year's goings-on see our New Year's Listings at the beginning of the Happenings section.

Two of the New Year's celebratory highlights are both Murder Mysteries. Who knows what about this holiday would make you want to solve a crime, but for those of you whose fancy it tickles, here you go.

Offering number one: Charlotte Repertory Theatre Murder at the Booth II - Murder Gras. This interactive murder mystery will feature prominent members of the community and selected guests. Tickets range from $85-$295 and are selling fast. For more information call 704-372-1000.

Offering number two: Old Courthouse Theatre Lock Phasers on Kill: A Sci-Fi Murder Mystery. Not your traditional Murder Mystery event - this fundraiser focuses on what could be a Trekkie's dream. Tickets are $55 for singles, $110 for couples. Space is limited so reservations could be made early. For more information call 704-788-2405.

Jubilate, the gospel New Year's Eve Celebration with performances by The Gaither Vocal Band, The Martins, The Talley trio and others, comes to the Charlotte Coliseum tonight at 7pm. Tickets are $16.50, $18.50, and $28.50. Call

704-357-4801 for more details.

Today is New Year's Day. Regret all of the food you've eaten over the holidays, regret all the champagne you drank last night, desperately try to remember where you put the aspirin - and remember your New Year's resolution so you can break it and get ready for 2002!

The Charlotte Checkers take on the Augusta Lynx in their first ice battle of the new year at 7pm tonight at Cricket Arena. Tickets range from $6-$19, and are available by calling 704-522-6500.
