Re: “Look! Up On The Screen!: The best and worst superhero films of all time

The first Ninja Turtles was a contender for the 5 worst list? That movie is great. I could see II or III on there, but to say any of them was a contender is pretty harsh.

Thanks for writing, davidhgi. I of course disagree that SUPERMAN doesn't hold up and was just "good for it's [SIC] time"; just because a movie doesn't have up-to-the-minute CGI doesn't mean it's outlived its usefulness or appeal. And by your logic, if I can't have V FOR VENDETTA, a movie about a costumed hero with no real superpowers, then I also can't have any movies featuring Batman, another costumed hero with no real superpowers. As for 300, that doesn't deserve to be on ANY "Best" list (although FROM HELL is very underrated).

Re: “Look! Up On The Screen!: The best and worst superhero films of all time

Please Matt, don't do this ever again. There's no problem with your Worst list but your Best list was just a mess. "Superman"? It was good for it's time but doesn't hold up over time. It may deserve an honorable mention but to have it top the list but the superior sequel doesn't make it disrespect and invalidates the whole thing.
The same argument works against "X-Men" with it's convoluted plot and unremarkable performances of half the cast.
And play by the rules you set. If it's a list of superhero films and not general comic book based movies, then you can't have "V For Vendetta". Why not "300"? Or "From Hell"?
Just an odd list that shouldn't be repeated.

Top 5 worse doesn't have Electra? Or the Rebb Brown Captain America?

Re: “Look! Up On The Screen!: The best and worst superhero films of all time

Matt, i picked up a copy of the paper on a whim solely because of your cover story, and you did not disappoint! It was interesting to me that you not only included The Incredibles, but listed it at number 4! A unique choice, and subject to debate I'm sure, but you'll get no debate from me. In fact, I essentially agreed with the reasoning behind your picks for both the good and the bad, aside from X-Men: First Class - (and where was Spider-Man 3 in your list? I know it's been overly criticized, but come on.) However, the reason I got online at all is for your critique of The Spirit. You could not have been more hilariously spot-on in your review. Honestly, the chosen method of lighting in that movie alone should have been grounds for banning the film in at least 13 countries. Well, maybe that's being a bit unfair of me...still, I often do think to myself, if i ever run out of toilet paper, at least I have my old copy of The Spirit. (Which I bought BEFORE ever viewing, be assured.)

Hey Matt, except for Spider-Man, (Tobey pulled the mask off way too much and Peter NEVER yelled at Uncle Ben!), I totally agree with your list. I especially liked that you recognized "The Incredibles" was not just a cartoon but a dang good movie. What do you think about adding "Unbreakable" to the list? I thought it was like a subtle version of Superman that rose above the usual craptastic fare of M Night.
