Due to technical problems, portions of the archives for the period of July-December 2005 are temporarily offline. We're working to restore them -- they should all be back online by May 2006. We're sorry for the inconvenience.
Our online archives start January 05, 2001. We have print archives of older articles stored at our offices; the best way to inquire about obtaining a copy of a story printed last century would be to call the front desk at 704-522-8334 during business hours.
This is the best way to search. Your everyday Google skills will help you here. If you need a brush-up, visit Google's Search Essentials.
To find articles, use a combination of these techniques:
This is a good way to search if you only have a vague idea of what you're looking for, like a news story you overheard people talking about, or a cover story about hot people.
Please note that you can only browse by one of these items at a time ... section, category, or author ... not a combination.
Browsing by section
This a good way to find recent articles if you know what section of our website or papers an article appeared in. If you're looking for an article that's several years old, there is a good chance that it has been archived in our "Old Archives" section. It'll be pretty hard to find anything by browsing that way ... you're better off doing a Google search. Also, you'll see that we put all of our cover stories in a special "Cover" section ... even if the story was about music or food.
Browsing by category
This a good way to find an article if you know both the section it was published in and the name of the column, like a News Feature. That's also a good way to browse through our older archives ... you'll see that "Old Archives" are broken up into several categories, like Arts and Food. We've made some technical changes to our databases recently, so there is a teeny chance that the article you're looking for is not archived in the proper category. In that case, your best option is to try to locate the article using the Google search on our site.
Browsing by Author
This a good way to catch up on the recent articles of your favorite writers. Unfortunately, due to a quirk in our databases, not all of the archived articles of an author will show up using this dropdown search. A surefire option is good old Google ... try searching for the author's name, and you'll find everything we've got by them. (Hint: use quote marks around a name, like "Hollis Gillespie" in order to get the best results.)
This is a great way to catch up on entire issues that you've missed. Just click on the image of the cover to view a table of contents for that issue.
For the most part, the content on our site should look pretty good. (Yay, us!) But every now and then, even we'll stumble across an article that looks ... well ... funky online. That's because we're publishing old articles with new design templates ... and sometimes, the formatting gets a little squirrely. Send us an email at online@cln.com and we'll hop to fixin' it.
