It's so funny that I never consciously thought about it, but 1997 IS about the time I "tuned out" of hip-hop. It was a gut response to how the music made me feel. I'm not sure if hip hop artists today fully realize, as the artists did during the time of the March, what an important vehicle they can be in facilitating change in the communities they rep so hard. I remember feeling incredibly proud during the time of the march. I was newly out of high school and it finally began to feel like being black in America wasn't some oppressive cross I'd have to bare for the rest of my life. There is hope though. There is always hope. Thanks CL for this refreshing bit of journalism :).
