A new social event has been created for the over-21 set. The premise: explore the museum after the hours, without the little ones underfoot. Hence Science After Dark presents Stars + Spirits. The Planetarium Building's exhibits and aquaria are open for perusal while savoring a nice glass of wine or throwing back a cold one. Attend a live star talk and the digital feature, Black Holes: The Other Side of Infinity. The cost of admission includes one (1) drink token. Planetarium shows are at 7 and 8 p.m. 6:30-9:30 p.m. $15/$10. Catawba Science Center, 243 Third Ave NE, Hickory, N.C. 828-322-8169.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
