AND THE AWARD GOES TO ...

The Academy's Oscar Night America

It's that time of year again. Oscar time. But what if this year you could really experience the Academy Awards like the stars in Hollywood? You can! The Academy's Oscar Night America program provides thousands of movie fans across the country the chance to experience the thrill and excitement of Oscar night in their own hometowns. Charlotte was one of 46 cities chosen to participate in this charity event that has raised over $7 million since it began in 1994. In addition, this year we are proud to welcome an Oscar statuette to our party, complete with its own guards, an honor afforded to only seven cities. The red carpet arrivals begin outside Omni Charlotte Hotel Ballroom at 6pm; our own Matt Brunson and Sean O'Connell of the Charlotte Weekly will mingle and discuss nominations. Tickets cost $50, $75, $100 and $200. For tickets or more info, call 704-972-2003, ext. 226, or visit www.charlottesymphony.org.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
