Art: Engraving display

The exhibition Quiet Spirit, Skillful Hand: The Graphic Work of Clare Leighton will feature more than 180 pieces by Clare Leighton. These consist of engravings, drawings and watercolors created from 1923-1965. The British-born artist has numerous stunning works that capture the working class, landscapes and more. Leighton lived in Chapel Hill, N.C. from 1943-1945 and taught at Duke University. Her work reflects scenes from both England and America. May 17-Sept. 14.   • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
