BENEFIT: 6th Annual Hope Floats Duck Race

Sunday, April 18

Watching 15,000 sunglass-wearing rubber ducks being dropped into the waterway at the U.S. National Whitewater Center to race might not sound like your idea of quality entertainment. Add in the chance to win prizes (including a $5,000 cash grand prize) and most of us will be ready to participate (and maybe even quack!). At the 6th Annual Hope Floats Duck Race, folks can adopt rubber duckies for $5 each to be thrown in the water for a race that supports the KinderMourn mission. For more information or to adopt a duck, call 704-376-2580 or visit 2 p.m.-5 p.m. U.S. National Whitewater Center, 5000 Whitewater Center Parkway. 704-391-3900.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
