BENEFIT: Turkey Fest '08

Monday, Nov. 17

Turkey Fest '08 has a lot to offer, but no turkey (It's not Thanksgiving yet!). Instead donate canned food items to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank and enjoy a load of events at three local Uptown pubs. A rock band competition and giveaways will go down at The Attic Bar and makeovers (from Aveda Institute and Mac makeup artists) and a silent auction at Madison's Bar and Lounge (Flavored Absolut martinis will also be available). And if that wasn't enough, Irish pub Connolly's has brewed up two speed competitions -- Charlotte's Fastest Bartender competition and a Best Tasting & Original Absolut Cocktail Bar Competition with a $500 cash prize. 7 p.m.-2 a.m. The Attic Bar, 200 N. Tryon St. Madison's Bar and Lounge, 115 E. 5th St. Connolly's On Fifth, 115 E. 5th St.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
