Nicia Carla

Charlotte audiences can't get enough of Carla, and neither can the best local theater companies. Carla's comedy has been surefire at Children's Theatre as the witch in Hansel and Gretel and the proper Miss Clavel in Madeline. She was a pre-eminent Chickspearean as a crossdressed Malvolio and a reimagined Bianca, and she was the funniest person onstage in BareBones' naughty production of The Underpants. The current City Stage Festival at Spirit Square is also featuring her work. Her comedy skills are so formidable that many have forgotten how credibly she executed the title role of Huckleberry Finn. Big nonstop ups for Nicia.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
