Best Local Newspaper Reporters
Danica Coto & Peter St. Onge, Charlotte Observer

Staff Pick

Their stories of 11-year-old Kayla Ramirez showed a young girl snared in the bungled mess that is U.S. immigration policy. “What Will Happen to Kayla?” was a achievement of compassionate, detailed reporting that brought readers into the complicated lives of Kayla and her family as they struggled for a better life. Coto has since moved on to The Associated Press, but let’s hope this isn’t the last we’ve read of Kayla.
