Bizarre crime from Charlotte police files (Oct. 8)

Free Ride

Lost and Found: A resident near Ballantyne was surprised to check for the mail last week and find a special delivery awaiting her in the mailbox. The woman reported finding an ounce of marijuana in her mailbox and not having any idea who it belonged to. In an unrelated incident, an employee at a Bojangle's on South Tryon Street called police after finding a handgun in the restaurant's bathroom.

Spillage: A Yellow Cab driver called police last week after a rider who may have had too much to drink ended up leaving something behind in the cab. The driver said that, following the ride, the suspect paid his fare and then vomited on the cab as he climbed out of it. He refused to pay the vomit fee, and the responding officers had to play judge. They finally ruled that the case was a civil and not criminal matter, because the vomit was on the edge of the door and the suspect had paid fully for his ride.

Free Ride: A 37-year-old man filed a police report after losing his friend during what should have been a short walk. He told officers he and his friend were walking back to their hotel from the Midnight Diner after a long night of drinking. They were offered a ride from a random man they had never met, and hopped into his car. They soon realized he was driving out of the city and well away from their Uptown hotel, so he told the man to stop at a gas station for directions. The reporting man got out of the car to ask for directions, while his friend remained asleep in the passenger seat. When he returned to the parking lot, the car and his friend were gone.

Midnight Snack: A 32-year-old Druid Hills woman called police after waking up one day last week to find someone had somehow shoved an entire candy bar down into the inner chamber of her gas tank.

Take A Guess: A woman filed a police report after her phone was stolen, most likely from her purse while she was grocery shopping. She said she knew it was stolen and not lost because she called it and an unknown suspect answered the phone by asking, "What do you want?"

Not Over Yet: An 11-year-old boy learned his lesson after allegedly bullying a girl on the school bus last week. The police report states that the boy called a girl several derogatory names one day at Robert F. Kennedy Middle School, and the two continued arguing on the school bus, where she warned the boy she would slap him. The two went their separate ways after exiting the bus, but when the girl got back on the bus in the morning, the boy allegedly immediately said, "I thought you were gonna slap me." At this, the girl "then exited her seat and slapped him across the face with an open hand," according to the police report.

Little Rascals: The locker rooms at Coulwood Middle School turned into a scene from a John Hughes movie last week after two puberty-stricken boys damn near caused a riot with their antics. According to the report, the two boys ran into the girls' locker room while the girls' volleyball team was changing clothes. Next, according to the report, "the actions of the two male suspects caused mayhem in the locker room and nearly caused a fight between the girl and the suspects."

Blotter items are chosen from the files of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
