Bizarre crimes from Charlotte police files

Got the munchies: A man and woman reported a breaking and entering, during which $32.30 in "goods" were stolen, including Little Debbie cakes, chips and hamburger meat. No word on if the thieves brought their own beverages.

Casper the common criminal: A woman reported a possible breaking and entering at her residence. She said that during the last four weeks miscellaneous items have suddenly gone missing and certain other items have also been moved out of place. This woman either really gets in the spirit of Halloween, or she may have forgotten she has a roommate.

Night Of The Drunken Dead: Charlotte really does go all out for Halloween. Two women were walking down the street at 2 a.m. when a man approached them mumbling incomprehensibly. He then brandished a knife and rushed the women, who got away without any harm done, just like in the movies.

Must Be A Cat Person: A man approached two women who were walking their dogs and told them he would put rat poison on the ground in the hopes that their dogs would eat it. He later told police he did this because the two women called him names. There's no guessing what still bothers this man more, his being bullied in school or his lack of attention from childhood pets.

Great Parenting: They say when you have a baby, it's not all about you anymore. This rings true in the ears of criminals as well. During one car break-in, the suspect made off with a portable CD player and TV, and he didn't forget to bring home gifts for his child. The suspect also took a black baby bag, which held a breast pump and two bottles. In an unrelated case, a man walked into a Family Dollar, grabbed some Johnson's baby lotion and a box of Johnson's baby wipes and ran to an awaiting car that sped off.

Heavy Sleepers: A husband and wife woke up to find that their home had been burglarized. Among the items stolen were two laptops, three large bottles of liquor, a plasma television wall mount, two cameras, an MP3 player, a briefcase, a cell phone, a personal computer, a wallet, eyeglasses and a set of keys.

Blotter items are chosen from the files of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
