CD REVIEW: Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse's Dark Night of the Soul

THE DEAL: Originally circulating in 2009, the collaboration between Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse and an array of guests is finally seeing the official light of day.

THE GOOD: Sparklehorse's Mark Linkous, who committed suicide in March of this year, is getting plenty of posthumous accolades thanks to this work. He shines on "Daddy's Gone," a duet with Nina Persson of The Cardigans — a Beatles-esque, melancholy rambler that revolves around the line "I woke up and all my yesterdays were gone." Wayne Coyne loans his falsetto best on the opening track, "Revenge." "Jaykub" with Jason Lytle, who also appears on "Everytime I'm With You," is about as close as anyone has come to sounding like Pink Floyd in years. It's no surprise that the music gets a bit of a distortion-fueled edge when Iggy Pop offers his vocals on "Pain." Another nice inclusion is "Grim Augury" featuring the late Vic Chesnutt.

THE BAD: Only that Linkous is no longer around to make more albums like this.

THE VERDICT: A haunting and emotion-filled opus that serves as a soundtrack with no film needed (though David Lynch, who appears on two tracks, has put together a 100-page photo collection to go with it.)

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
