CD Review: Eels
Useless Trinket: B-Sides, Soundtracks, Rarities and Unreleased 1996-2006

The Deal: Eels releases two-CD collection, containing a total of 50 tracks. The collection also features a DVD of Eels performing 6 songs at Lollapalooza.
The Good: There is too much that's good about this collection. For starters, it contains some of the most loved unreleased Eels tracks "Fucker," "Animal," "Stepmother" and a whole lot more. Then there are the covers that mastermind of Eels, Mark Oliver Everett (also known as E), has performed over the years. These consist of Prince's "If I Was Your Girlfriend," Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling In Love," Daniel Johnston's "Living Life," Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell On You" and James Carr's "Dark End of The Street." There are also tracks from movie soundtracks How The Grinch Stole Christmas ("Christmas Is Going To The Dogs"), The End of Violence ("Bad News"), Holes ("Mighty Fine Blues" and "Eyes Down") and Levity ("Skywriting" and "Taking A Bath In Rust"). There are different versions and live performances recorded in Tennessee and at the BBC of "My Beloved Monster," (alternative titles are "My Beloved Mad Monster Party" and "My Beloved Monstrosity"). There are remix and alternative versions of "Novocaine For the Soul," (the Moog Cookbook Remix) that distorts E's voice with robotic-like sounds, a new version of "Lucky Day In Hell" that is heavy on beats and a whole lot more.
The Verdict: A must-have for any Eels fan and a great introduction for new fans, along with the new "best of" CD plus DVD, Meet The Eels: Essential Eels.
