CD Review: Jack Johnson

Sleep Through the Static

The Deal: Folkie continues his surf style on fourth album.

The Good: Known for his happy, funky acoustic stylings that easily convey his surfing lifestyle, Jack Johnson has taken a mellow turn on his new album, though one that would still fit well on a beach. After having recorded the soundtrack for the Curious George movie, Johnson decided to look in a new direction. The album focuses more on his children and the world they're growing up into. "If I Had Eyes" sounds a lot like his previous work.

The Bad: I kind of missed the happy, carefree tunes. That's not to say they're all depressing, but it comes across as the "more mature" instead of the guy who sang about pancakes.

The Verdict: One of those kick back and chill records you'd expect from a surfer. If you liked his other albums, this one'll fit right in.

Brushfire; Release date: Feb. 5, 2008
