CD review: Jim Avett's Tribes

The Deal: Father of The Avett Brothers' Scott and Sean releases seven-song album, Tribes, on Ramseur Records on Feb. 26.

The Good: Jim Avett's voice is at the forefront of his music – aged vocals that fit nicely over the soothing acoustic tunes. His daughter, Bonnie, helps with vocals on "This Will Take Time." While the songs are mostly folk, the fiddle and groove of "Fight With a Bottle of Booze" and "That Old House" are more of country-bluegrass tracks. Among the guest musicians on the album, Bob Crawford and Joe Kwon of the Avetts show up on most of the tracks. As a whole, the CD is almost refreshing in its simplicity.

The Bad: Only that Avett doesn't give his own talent and abilities more credit.

The Verdict: There's a comfort in the music equivalent to going home for the holidays. It's peaceful, soothing music that envelopes you like a warm blanket. A CD release party will be held at The Evening Muse on Feb. 26 with Amelia's Mechanics and The Stereofidelics.
