THE DEAL: As the group has for the last four decades, Los Lobos delivers the goods with style.
THE GOOD: A musician friend once paid Los Lobos the ultimate musical compliment: "Man, those guys aren't afraid to mess anything up." What he meant was that the band members — Cesar Rosas, David Hidalgo, Louie Perez and Conrad Lozano — have no qualms about approaching any type of music and adapting it to their own tastes. Tin Can Trust, the band's first release in four years, is a mix of cumbia ("Yo Canto"), norteño ("Mujer Ingrata"), funk ("Do the Murray"), snaky blues ("On Main Street") and south of the border rock 'n' roll (most everything else). It's a smooth ride. You don't need an interpreter to appreciate or enjoy it — it washes over you in a soothing stream with just enough spice to whet your appetite for more.
THE BAD: Could have done without "All My Bridges Burning," Rosas' collaboration with Robert Hunter. More Hunter than Rosas, it's got too much of a lame hippie vibe to fit in with what we've come to expect from Los Lobos. The band does a great job rocking the Dead's "West L.A. Fadeaway" and should have left it at that.
THE VERDICT: Los Lobos is comprised of Mexico's premier musical ambassadors. If this is your introduction to this type of Southern music, you couldn't be in better hands. If you're an LL veteran, just sit back and enjoy the spicy flavors you've become accustomed to.
