CD Review: Nada Surf

Lucky

The Deal: The Brooklyn-based alternative pop/rock trio releases its fifth album. For the forgetful, their sarcastic, high school-outlined video "Popular," aired with success on MTV in 1996.

The Good: The album is charged with chirpy, wistful and energetic melodies, beginning with the band's first track and single "See These Bones." The track is about being enlightened of life's preciousness through viewing the ancient bones of monks in a crypt in Rome. It's a song that is hard to stop listening to and seems to keep getting played over and over. But, why wear out one track on the album when there are plenty more? From the soothing "Beautiful Beat" to "Are You Lightning?" and the more rocking tracks like "From Now On" to "Ice on the Wing," the album is full of cheer and harmonious chords. "The Fox" is an eerie melody of deceit that folds into a calming chorus. "I Like What You Say" is sure to be the band's second single with its catchy radiant hooks. The album's last song, "The Film Did Not Go 'Round," is a simple acoustic cutesy track featuring female vocalist Lianne Smith and it seals the deal that this album is a rich effort in Nada Surf's musical pathway. Lead singer Matthew Caw's vocals are emotional and heart-warming. A variety of musicians from other bands also appear on the album, including Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard, Long Winters' John Roderick and Harvey Danger's Sean Nelson.

The Bad: I didn't hear anything bad on this album.

The Verdict: A great album that soothes the soul and really does leave you feeling lucky.
