CD Review: Ramseur Records' My Favorite Gifts

Avett Brothers bassist Bob Crawford and Dolph Ramseur of Ramseur Records have teamed up to put together a holiday album as a fundraiser for the Vickie S. Honeycutt Foundation. The 10-song disc starts with Overmountain Men's "Rambling Door to Door," led by the weathered and heart-warming vocals of David Childers. The David Wax Museum offers a Latin flavor with "La Rama." Jim Avett's song "The Brightest Star" spotlights his voice in harmony with Charly Lowry of Dark Water Rising. The Avett Brothers perform the solemn "I Thank God" while Jessica Lea Mayfield sings "Little Toy Trains." Paleface's gruff vocals bring a cover of The Pogues' "Fairytale of New York." Other artists on the album include David Mayfield, Nick and the Babes, Mark Crozer and The Wood Brothers. While only three songs on the album are original works, the album is a collection of "not-so holiday classics," which were donated by the included artists for a good cause — 'tis the season for giving, after all. The proceeds from the album aid the non-profit charity, which helps give financial support to educators who are battling cancer. Vickie Honeycutt was a school teacher who lost her battle against cancer in 2010. "I feel that all of these songs contrast and compliment one another in a way that reflect our times and the many diverse ways in which we celebrate and reflect during this time of year," Bob Crawford says in the album's liner notes.
