CD Review: Sugarland

Love on the Inside

The Deal: Country group releases third disc, second album as a duo.

The Good: Jennifer Nettles has one of the most powerful female voices in music today. It was jaw dropping back in the days of the Jennifer Nettles Band and just as amazing in her current country setting. The album kicks off with the country-pop "All I Want to Do." Kristian Bush finds moments to add harmony in just the right amount, such as the bluegrass-tinged "We Run" and "Genevieve." The band finds plenty of time to keep things upbeat, while also showcasing a slower side with ballads such as "Joey" and "Keep You." The "Deluxe Fan Edition" features five bonus songs including a live cut of "Life in a Northern Town," a cover of The Dream Academy's song featuring Jake Owen and Little Big Town. The band shines on the acoustic, live bonus track "Come On Get Higher," a cover of a song by Matt Nathanson.

The Bad: I prefer the upbeat to the slow and lonely tracks, but there's really nothing to complain about.

The Verdict: It's no secret that I'm not a big fan of all the new country music that's released, but Nettles' vocal prowess helps set Sugarland apart from a monotonous pack of cowboy hats. Fans of Nettles' old band or Sugarland should be pleased with the band's latest release.
