Chew No. 1

The Deal: It's the debut issue of Chew, the new ongoing monthly series from writer John Layman and artist Rob Guillory. The book chronicles the adventures of police detective Tony Chu -- who happens to be "cibopathic," which means he can get psychic impressions from the food he eats. So, if he eats a hamburger, he can get flashes of a cow being killed. And when it comes to his police work, he is, for example, able to find out how a murder victim was killed by ... well ... eating the corpse. Yeah, it's nasty.
The Good: I was excited about this comic when it was announced months ago -- and that excitement was totally based on the uniqueness of the book's high concept. That said, I'm happy to say the execution of the comic lives up to the coolness of its concept. With Tony Chu, Layman has created a smart, sensitive and passionate sleuth who has the potential to grow into a pop culture icon like Batman or Sherlock Holmes. (Yeah, I said it. Whatchu gonna do?) Plus, how many comics are out there for foodies? The comic revels in the preparation of food and the description of ingredients. Many creators would gloss over those kind of details, but the team behind Chew understands that those elements help to build a rich and interesting world.
The Bad: I've got no complaints. I pretty much like everything I've read so far.
The Verdict: Tastes great. Buy it.
