WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28

Gift Horse Back from churning up SXSW, Athens, Ga., combo's Slowdive and shoe-gazer-inspired pop expands the genre infused with fresh blood. There are post-punk sentiments while the guitars ride surf waves with fuzzy highs and lows. The band has just dropped its guitar noise debut recording, Mountain of Youth, that's also touched with jazzy interludes. With Jeremiah and the Howling Owls. Snug Harbor (Samir Shukla)

THURSDAY, APRIL 29

Twin Tigers Here's another Athens, Ga., band descending with layered guitars looping, diving and coming around the bend with a full-on twist. Sure, they gaze at their shoes, but the building crescendos, dropping below the radar just enough to fire up the amps, are quite riveting. The combo's got the moxie to pull threads from their influences – My Bloody Valentine, Ride – and then bring them into new context. Dream noise, indeed. With Dead Confederate and The Spalding Grays. The Line Up Say what you want about the current state of hip-hop, but please believe there's a lot of life and energy coming from indie artists working today. Underground hip-hop is alive and well in Charlotte and local staple Ike Turnah has put together a virtual who's who of the underground scene for the The Line Up. You can check out long-time Queen City rappers Big Treal, 20/Twenty, Wolly Vinyl and Black Flag Records, along with other up and comers at The District in Pineville. (Mike McCray)

FRIDAY, APRIL 30

The Church Marking three decades, Steve Kilbey, Peter Koppes and Marty Willson-Piper founded The Church in Sydney, Australia, in 1980, the band's catalog of lush and shimmering gorgeousness, acoustic moodiness and spacey driving music hasn't unraveled or aged a bit. Last year's haunting release Untitled #23 is a part of this current tour, "An Intimate Space," where they will perform a song from each of their numerous releases in reverse order. Benji Hughes Might as well call Snug Harbor home to Benji Hughes ... not because he lives there, but because he always appears so freakin' comfortable within its dim confines. He's got plenty of material to draw from after releasing his double-CD opus, A Love Extreme. That doesn't mean you won't hear a Prince cover amongst the tunes or something else might be up the often-shirtless hirsute singer's proverbial sleeve. With Super Ape, McClintock Gs. SATURDAY, MAY 1

Mama's Love Its influence triple-dips into the pools of funk, rock and soul. Lead/rhythm vocalist Thomas Galloway adds electricity to what would be yet another band recycling '70s funk music, by threading in some '80s and '90s rock vocals. Splicing electric guitar chords and rock vocals within a mostly funk set is what separates these men from the boys – it's all about reinventing old influences. The youthful quintet from Athens, Ga., started making noise in 2006 under the alias Funkward Bound. Having since changed its name, the band now totes the bumper sticker slogan, "Come get some Mama's Love." With Major Magick. Double Door Inn (Nicole Pietrantonio)

Q-bex Drummer Jeff Sipe of Apt. Q-258 is teaming up with guitarist/singer Greg Humphreys and bassist Andy Ware, both of Hobex, for a limited number of shows together. What to expect? Your guess is as good as mine. I'm guessing a fair number of Hobex tunes and a few covers. There are hints to "very special guests," but you can never be sure what that means. SUNDAY, MAY 2

Brother Dege Born and bred in south Louisiana, Brother Dege's Delta blues evokes classic bluesman like Son House, but with a definitive Cajun-peppered vibe. A founding member of the swamp/psych band Santeria, Bro Dege has also put in a stint with CC Adcock and released much solo work with slide guitar and lonesome crooning, all rooted in punk and hard rock. MONDAY, MAY 3

Korn During their hiatus, Korn front man Jonathan Davis hit Tremont Music Hall for an intense, yet poorly attended, solo tour stop. Now, the band is back together and gearing up for the release of its newest album by warming up on another small club tour – this time stopping at the 2,000-capacity Fillmore. Let's hope more people show up for this one – I can only imagine the energy that will swell inside of that place. It could be left in ruins. With 2 Cents, Saint Diablo.
