CL previews upcoming concerts (Jan. 19-23)

WEDNESDAY, JAN. 19

GRANT HART Hart's contribution as drummer and co-songwriter for groundbreaking 1980s rockers Hüsker Dü still reverberates in the world of indie rock. Last year's Hot Wax is his third solo release and first in a decade, and is stacked with cogent, lacerating as well as reflective songs that tap into Hart's songwriting chops. Since Hüsker Dü's demise in 1987, he's clocked in time with the short-lived combo Nova Mob, solo recordings and session work. His latest doesn't forget the trademark sonic sounds tickled with pop melodies, though. With the Venables and GoGo Pilot. $8. Snug Harbor. www.snugrock.com. (Samir Shukla)

WAHNDER LUST Los Angeles duo Kim Manning and Lantz Lazwell sort of have this duo thing down. Both can sing. Both can play keys and guitar. And both willingly tag team vocals on funky, rock grooves. Manning rode with George Clinton and P-Funk for a decade, this should be no sweat. Charlotte's Devon Elizabeth is also on the bill. $7. Double Door Inn. www.doubledoorinn.com. (Mike McCray)

THURSDAY, JAN. 20

JJ GREY & MOFRO This right-cheer is a make-up show from one that was canceled a couple of months back. (JJ and the 'Fro will be dressed in full drag for the duration of the evening's jams). OK, so we're kidding. He got food poisoning the last time he was here, and tonight's gig is the replacement. So, for all of you who already have tickets, it's like a free show! Woohoo! Unless you forgot and have to work all evening or broke up with the person you were dating at the time, which would kind of suck. But hey, call in sick! Take someone new! Provided they like swampy, no-nonsense, meat and potatoes, semi-Allman-joyous Southern rock. And if they don't, leave 'em at home anyway. $20-$24. Visulite Theatre. www.visulite.com. (Timothy C. Davis)

FRIDAY, JAN. 21

BASS CHURCH The eighth installment of this exploration of bass music is more than just another party for the dubstep kids but literally a history lesson on the genre. Parts reggae, hip-hop, grime, garage and more, it's an entertaining show. Mindelixir headlines the monthly event, which is billed as the biggest monthly bass party in the entire Southeast. 21+ free, $10 under 21. Neighborhood Theatre. www.neighborhoodtheatre.com. (McCray)

THOSE DARLINS The Tennessee quartet Those Darlins will feel right at home inside Snug Harbor. The band's garage rock sound is infused with some old-school country guts. The band is touring before the release of its sophomore album, Screws Get Loose, which is due in March. Buy the girls a beer and they'll just rock harder. With Shovels & Rope (Cary Ann Hearst & Michael Trent), Lamb Handler. $8. 10 p.m. Snug Harbor. www.snugrock.com. (Jeff Hahne)

FRED EAGLESMITH Canuck Eaglesmith will sing about cars, mind you, and old dogs, and all the bullshit that goes into too much of what's called Americana these days. But like his country-mates Blue Rodeo, he's shucked the usual trappings of the genre for a trippier take on heartland country. While he's penned some solid Big Theme stuff over the years, Eaglesmith flies highest when he thinks small, as in little things like love and hope and missing his old lady. Little old lady, that is. With Emily Lynch; Crowfield. $15. The Evening Muse. www.theeveningmuse.com. (Davis)

SATURDAY, JAN. 22

CROOKED FINGERS This is the ongoing project of singer/guitarist Eric Bachmann, who fronted the N.C. rockers Archers of Loaf through most of the '90s and made a couple of fine records with the outfit Barry Black. Bachmann kicked off the new century with Crooked Fingers' soulful, melancholy pop and rock, which permeates the air when he hits the stage, the guitar mingling with every word and hum. With Eric-Scott Guthrie. $10. The Evening Muse. www.theeveningmuse.com. (Shukla)

TERRY ADAMS ROCK & ROLL QUARTET Adams, the freewheeling pianist who founded the woefully unsung rockers NRBQ back in 1969, has lent his piano to numerous outfits and recordings since then. He's been fronting this R&R quartet since 2007. Adams is a musical treasure, converging rock, blues, jazz, and experimentation into eclectic recordings, and even more stylistically unconfined live performances. $12-$15. Double Door Inn. www.doubledoorinn.com. (Shukla)

JUCIFER The husband and wife duo known as Jucifer pull no punches when they perform. Known for the wall of speakers set up behind them, G. Amber Valentine and Edgar Livengood prefer strobes, distortion, screaming and heavy-handed strumming. Livengood plays like he's out to smash his sticks right through the drums. Even the band recommends earplugs. With Machete!, Gloominous Doom. $8-$12. 9 p.m. The Milestone. www.themilestoneclub.com. (Hahne)

SUNDAY, JAN. 23

RONNNIE BURRAGE W/ BRANFORD MARSALIS It's not often that you get high-quality jazz musicians in Charlotte, especially in small clubs. So, the town should take notice that two greats will be in town for what should be a stellar night of music. Drummer Ronnie Burrage has performed with Jaco Pastorius, Bobby McFerrin, Frank Morgan, Jackie McLean and numerous others. Branford Marsalis will be his guest and needs no introduction. Marsalis was most recently in town performing with Dave Matthews Band last summer. $15/$20. Petra's Piano Bar. www.petraspianobar.com. (Hahne)
