JOHN MAYER The singer/guitarist was recently named to Rolling Stone's list of the new guitar gods. He's shared the stage with Clapton and may think "Your body is a wonderland," but his live show is entertaining as much for his musical abilities as it is for the "oh face" he makes while performing. FRIDAY AUGUST 3
INTETHOD The blistering metal trio Intethod keep it simple with guitars, drums, bass and "pissed off at just about everything that moves" vocals. It's a hellish mix of headbanging in the tried and true tradition of Slayer, Sabbath, and Megadeth. The N.C. band has been rattling ear drums for a few years and rockers such as "Casa Diablo" keep their authenticity hammered into place. Irish Cue, Cornelius (Shukla)
ASTRID HAVEN AND THE SHOCK POP ALL STARS The Queen City's own industrial metal and punk noisemakers self-describe their muse as acid-shock-candy-core. Ok, we'll go with it. If blood-stained electro-industrial barrage is the mood of the evening, this gig will please the palate. Also on the bill: Streifte Geist, Sanctums Hill, Dead 7, and The Putrid Pattern. SATURDAY AUGUST 4
JOHN DOE Maybe it's all the recent touring with punk legends X, but A Year in the Wilderness rocks harder than any of Doe's previous solo records, without sacrificing any of the poignancy that catalog is known for. On record, former X-running mate Dave Alvin chips in with his usual impeccable guitar chops, as do pedal steel maestro Greg Leisz and the Black Key's Dan Auerbach. But it may be duets with Kathleen Edwards, Jill Sobule and Amiee Mann that most conjure the collaborative spirit, if not quite the voice, of Doe and Exene Cervenka's best X material. Touring with promising twang rockers Dead Rock West as his backing band, expect another great show from a rock & roll legend who refuses to rest on his considerable laurels. Visulite (Schacht)
L.A. TOOL & DIE Locals LAT&D released the promising pop gem Fashion for the Evildoer in 2004, then simply vanished off the music map for the better part of 2.5 years. Now they're back with a new, untitled record in the can that promises to be, according to their MySpace site, a "huge departure in sound" from their previous bassoon(!)-powered summer synth pop. Let's hope that bassoon's still in the mix somewhere. With Atlanta 's The Preakness. Snug Harbor (Schacht)
SUNDAY AUGUST 5
FAT CABBAGE This Albemarle-based funky rhythm and blues band can handle covers without sounding dated and pull a few originals out of the guitar case to keep things rolling along. Vocalist Joy Almond's bluesy wail lifts Fat Cabbage a few rungs above area cover bands populating local gin joints. They'll perform for the monthly gathering of the Charlotte Blues Society. PETE ROCK Perhaps best known for his work on the Pete Rock and CL Smooth smash "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)" -- one of the top hip-hop songs of all time by most anyone's measure. Rock's best known for his melding of warmer, sometimes jazzy tones into his production mix along with steady, loping Jeep beats. (Or what used to be called Jeep beats in the pre-SUV era ... Esca-bass, perhaps?) With Little Brother, Supastition & DJ DR, all of whom are worth the price of admission by their lonesome. Neighborhood Theatre (Davis)
TUESDAY AUGUST 7
THE CHARMS Throw a batch of 80s and 90s pop influences in the bucket and out jumps danceable, yet hard pop that gelled in tiny garages in the hoods of Boston. Swirling keyboards and new wavish guitar riffs wrap around singer Ellie Vee's spunky gal vocals. There's enough roughness around the edges to add a 21st century twist, though. Milestone (Shukla)
