COMEDY: Derek Richards

Comedian Derek Richards has been busy. He's not only battled disease (he's a cancer survivor) but also ventured across the globe (to Cuba, Iraq, Afghanistan, United Arab Emirates, etc.), providing laughs to the armed forces. His act mingles a range of tales, some of which include his time being raised in Detroit, the holidays, life in "sunny" Florida, and his former relationship with an exotic dancer.

8 p.m. & 10:15 p.m. Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. The Comedy Zone Fort Mill at Madisons on the Corner, 900 Crossroads Plaza, Fort Mill, S.C.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
