Wednesday, July 18 -- Charlotte nightlife sucks? Well, yeah ... sometimes it does. To remedy that, the folks at Creative Loafing and The Sol Kitchen present: Pop Life. What the hell is Pop Life? It's a weekly, multimedia nightlife event featuring art, fashion, live performances and a host of DJs playing the most eclectic blend of music in the city -- from soul to funk to afro-beat, Brazilian, house and more. 6 p.m.-until. Free. Prevue (formerly Gilda's), 2901 N. Davidson St. www.creativeloafing.com.

Friday, July 20 -- Sure, Brian McKnight (an R&B heavyweight) is set to play Charlotte again tonight. Hailing from upstate N.Y., Brian's velvety smooth tunes have been a staple on love-making mix CDs for a while. His latest Ten, has spawned the hit "Used To Be My Girl" and proclaims McKnight's staying power in an ever younger industry. Be there to witness the best soulful crooning in a long time. 7 p.m. $51. Ovens Auditorium, 2700 E. Independence Blvd. 704-522-6500. www.ovensauditorium.com.

The full-day summer show returns, along with showcases from experienced street athletes, chances to get up close to your favorite musician through the tour's "no backstage" approach, plus a DIY-Fest tent with workshops, screenings and performances. Bands are numerous, but highlights include local favorites Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Underoath, post-hardcore skate-punks Pennywise, original DIY rude boys Bad Religion, Hawthorne Heights, The Almost, The Toasters and New Found Glory. 11 a.m. $22.50. • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
