Upcoming Events in the Q.C.

Thursday, Nov. 8 Dane Cook has been called "a comedian phenom and icon" and named Time magazine's "Most Influential People of 2006." He's appeared in movies like London with Jessica Biel, Employee of the Month alongside reported squeeze Jessica Simpson, and Good Luck Chuck with Jessica Alba. That's right, he's been near the Jessica triumvirate! And now his "Rough Around the Edges" Tour brings him to Crowntown. Check out his interesting delivery in an arena-setting. 7:30 p.m. $30-$100. Charlotte Bobcats Arena, 333 E. Trade St. 704-522-6500. www.charlottebobcatsarena.com.

Friday, Nov. 9 Charlotte is set to premiere Martin McDonagh's dark, Olivier-winning play. The Pillowman centers on the problems of a writer whose stories seem to imitate real-life ... to a T. The plot sweeps from the land in the author's imaginative, yet shadowy fairytales and his interrogation in the present. A lot of hot-button topics culled from current feelings are tackled, including censorship, freedom of speech and the power of the state. Children and former nicheads beware: show "contains strong adult content" and "smoking occurs on-stage." 8 p.m. $15. Actor's Theatre of Charlotte, 650 E. Stonewall St. 704-342-2251 x1. www.actorstheatrecharlotte.org.

Saturday, Nov. 10 First, the CIAA Basketball Tournament moved to Charlotte. And now this? Yep. The CIAA Football Championship is here. Check out your favorite black college football action. Get up with folks you haven't seen in a while. Rock in your seat as the bands put on a show to make the radio feel bad. And, be on hand for the greatest moment of all -- HALFTIME. Relive the memories, feel the pride. It's C-I, baby. Another featured event is Food Lion's "Taste of Food Lion." 1 p.m. $15 ADV; $12-$20. Memorial Stadium, 310 N. Kings Drive. 757-865-0071. www.theciaa.com.

Sunday, Nov. 11 With Michael Vick still indisposed on dog-fighting charges, a sad Atlanta Falcons squad faces the Carolina Panthers tonight. The Falcon record of 1-6 leaves little threat to the Panthers for a win. It just seems unfair to beat up on 'em though. Like kicking a man when he's down. And believe me, Panthers fans, this team is down and out. 1 p.m. $30-$96. Bank of America Stadium, 800 S. Mint St. 704-358-7800. www.panthers.com.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
