Company of the Year

In a year when drama dominated the Charlotte theater scene, Carolina Actors Studio Theatre dominated the drama category. With four of our eight nominees for best drama, two of our three top-rated shows, and five of our Sweetest 12. Two shows that did not crack our Sweet 16, No Exit and Someone Who'll Watch Over Me, were richly satisfying experiences in CAST's smaller boxagon space, yielding a healthy spate of nominations and a couple of awards. But the company really pulled away from their rivals by outdoing themselves in the tech awards, winning the laurels for Best Set Designer and Best Costume Designer for the first time ever on their way to sweeping the category. As the new Central Avenue synergy sprouted up around them throughout 2009, looking like the makings of a fringe theater district, CAST did more than its share to amp up the excitement and expectations.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
