Concrete + Fam = Good Times

Saturday, June 30

I think it was Dr. Phil who said nothing builds family unity like kicking another family's ass in a tricycle race. Come out to the park and celebrate your family pride at the Carolina Hoopfest & Family Challenge 2007. See if dad can really dunk like he swears he used to in high school, find out how good mom can work her hips with a hula hoop and then argue in the car on the way home after losing in family trivia because you forgot Timmy's favorite color. Free food, free health screenings and a chance to see the police beat up on firefighters (instead of you). Ahh, togetherness. 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Free. Camp Green Basketball Complex, 1221 Alleghany St. 704-759-9538.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
