Cult Movie Monday

When: Mon., July 30, 7 p.m. 2012
Price: Free admission
I was inebriated when I initially saw 1985's The Goonies during its original theatrical run, and a pair of sober subsequent viewings have convinced me that the first really was the way to go. Hailed in some quarters as an '80s classic, this Spielberg-produced confection is an amiable if hardly exceptional film about seven kids who possess a map that will supposedly lead them to a pirate's long-hidden stash. Familiar faces abound, including a 14-year-old Sean Astin (later to win fanboy adoration as The Lord of the Rings' Samwise Gamgee), a 17-year-old Josh Brolin (now a top star thanks to such films as No Country for Old Men and Milk), and Ke Huy Quan (who a year earlier had played Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom). The best thing about the movie? Cyndi Lauper's catchy theme song, of course! The Goonies is being presented by The Light Factory and Theatre 650 as part of the monthly Cult Movie Mondays series.
