"Defiant Requiem": Music and Resistance in the Nazis' Theresienstadt camp

Film-showing with remarks by Dr. Susan Cernyak-Spatz, survivor of Theresienstadt and Auschwitz. "Defiant Requiem" is an 80-minute documentary film that highlights a dramatic example of intellectual and artistic courage in the Theresienstadt camp: the forming of a choir and use of music to “sing to the Nazis what they could not say to them.” With testimony provided by surviving members of Schächter’s choir, soaring concert footage, cinematic dramatizations, and evocative animation, 'Defiant Requiem' explores the singers’ view of Verdi’s piece as a work of defiance and resistance.
